The difficulties that Somali fishermen face.

After the collapse of the central government, the country entered a state of crisis, resulting in widespread destruction of its infrastructure. Fishermen faced significant challenges as a consequence. Historically, the Somali population has not been particularly fond of eating fish, leading to a small number of fishermen due to the limited consumer base. This devastation has created numerous problems for small-scale fishermen, affecting both the economy and their livelihoods. Some of these problems include: Foreign vessels engaging in illegal fishing in our waters pose a significant threat. Our seas are rich in various fish species, making them attractive to these vessels. Perceiving little risk of being challenged, they fish increasingly closer to the coast, often entangling the nets laid by small fishermen. As a result, fishermen lose both their nets and the fish they aim to catch. Additionally, these foreign vessels dump waste into the sea, causing severe harm to the marine environm...

Challenges ahead to develop Somali’s Marine forces (Navy)

The last articles we discussed focused on illegal fishing and recent operations in Somali waters. The overall conclusion to address these challenges is the development of Somalia's Navy; without this, the existing issues in our oceans will persist. In recent years, the rebuilding of Somalia's key institutions has been underway, with some making significant progress. However, the marine forces (Navy) have not shown visible improvements, despite Somalia having the longest mainland coast in Africa. The country has faced severe challenges, and the government has been preoccupied with numerous pressing issues. Now is the time to prioritize the development of our Navy. There are many challenges ahead in reshaping the Navy, including financial obstacles and a lack of focus on developing marine forces. The Navy requires a larger budget that necessitates careful planning, especially for sea operations, which differ significantly from land forces. They need a variety of equipment, includ...

The claim of Maritime Insecurity in Somalia

After the collapse of the central government in Somalia, maritime insecurity arose with the outbreak of piracy. In this article, the author does not aim to discuss the underlying causes of piracy in Somalia; instead, the argument presented is that the current maritime insecurity may compel the international community to create a new mission against piracy and related crimes or extend the mandate of the existing mission in Somalia. Following the government's devastation, a surge of organized crime occurred in Somali waters, prompting the world to take action against these offenses. While various perspectives exist regarding the motivations behind these criminal groups, this discussion will focus on the necessity of extending the mandates of ongoing missions in the Somali sea, such as Operation Atalanta, or establishing new missions to prevent such crimes. The international community, particularly the European Union, has received support from the UN, which deployed troops to Somali w...
